On May 19, 1775, a rider raced into Charlotte, North Carolina, with news of the clash of colonists against the British at the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Alarmed by this news and having suffered under the unjust laws of King George, III, a group of local Patriots met throughout the night and into May 20 to draft the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence.
Welcome
We are delighted that you would like to learn about the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR). We are always honored to share information with those who are interested in DAR, and we continually look for new opportunities to promote the DAR objectives within our local community. Our members are committed to promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. We enjoy our volunteer activities and are proud to make a difference in the lives of our community, state, and country.
In addition to our regular meetings, our chapter sponsors educational awards and scholarships. We support the Crossnore Communities for Children and volunteer with our veterans. We honor our American Revolutionary War ancestors, recognize outstanding citizens in our area, and sponsor history essay contests.
Each member is a direct descendant of a Patriot of the American Revolutionary War.

Chapter members attended the funeral of WWII U.S. Army Air Forces Tuskegee Airman, Second Lieutenant Fred L. Brewer, Jr., of Charlotte.

Chapter activities involve preserving old gravestones by cleaning them with a unique solution at historic cemeteries throughout Charlotte.

One of our chapter members, wrote a book for young children about the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence and how it came to be.
