About Us
History
The Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence Chapter, NSDAR, was established in North Carolina on February 22, 1912, with 35 charter members. The chapter’s name honors the signing of the historic Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence in Charlotte on May 20, 1775. Initially, members were required to be direct descendants of the signers but this requirement was lifted in 1958. In its early years, the chapter was informally referred to as the Signers’ Chapter. Julia McGeHee Alexander was the first regent of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence Chapter, NSDAR. We visit her gravesite every year and celebrate our chapter’s anniversary.
Our chapter has steadily grown over the years. We take pride in our volunteer activities as they allow us to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our community, state, and country. Alongside our regular monthly meetings, our chapter sponsors educational awards and scholarships, supports Crossnore Communities for Children, and provides donations to veterans receiving medical care at the South Charlotte Veterans Administration (VA) Clinic and the North Charlotte VA Clinic.

Julia McGeHee Alexander founded our chapter in 1912 to honor the signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence.

Our members are preparing to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence on May 20, 2025.
Meetings
Our chapter meets once a month from January through May and September through December. Through various engaging chapter programs and activities, we aim to promote the DAR objectives of historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Most of our meetings include a guest speaker, a brief business meeting, and light refreshments.
We encourage anyone interested in joining DAR to attend one of our meetings to better understand our organization and especially our chapter. You will learn more about our chapter by clicking on What We Do to learn about activities that we do throughout the year.
