What We Do

We are dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children. Below are examples of activities listed in our three main areas of projects.

Promoting Patriotism

  • Send greeting cards to active-duty service members and veterans to remember them during holidays.
  • Attend Honor Flights and welcome veterans back from Washington, DC, with a patriotic celebration at the airport.
  • Support Wreaths Across America and participate in wreath-laying ceremony.
  • Observe Veterans Day and participate in the Veterans Day Parade.
  • Support the W.G. Hefner Salisbury Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the VA Healthcare Clinics in Charlotte.
  • Attend naturalization ceremonies and welcome new citizens with gift bags.
  • Celebrate the commemoration of Meck Dec Day, May 20, 1775, in uptown Charlotte by dressing in red, white and blue, and handing out scrolls and other patriotic items to the public.

Our chapter celebrated Veterans Day by raising funds to support programs for veterans.

Members enjoy festivities during the annual Meck Dec Day on May 20 in Charlotte.

Historic Preservation

  • Mark graves of local American Revolutionary War Patriots and continue to research and locate graves.
  • Research service and lineage of American Revolutionary War Patriots.
  • Honor our American Revolutionary War Patriots with a book listing all the chapter patriots.
  • Donate hours indexing and categorizing historic records.
  • Support the National Society for the Preservation of NSDAR buildings.
  • Commemorative events by presenting our wreath at ceremonies for the Battle of Kings Mountain, the Battle of Cowan’s Ford, and Cowpens.

Chapter members on a fieldtrip to see The House in the Horseshoe in Sanford, North Carolina which was involved in an American Revolutionary War battle.

Our chapter placed a marker dedicated to Ephraim Brevard, a Revolutionary soldier, patriot, and signer — and reputed author — of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence.

Education

  • Create Constitution Week displays in local schools and also at the President James K. Polk Historic Site Museum.
  • Sponsor American History Essay Contests for students in fifth to eighth grades.
  • Sponsor DAR Good Citizens program and Scholarship Contest for high school seniors.
  • Sponsor Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) Awards to cadets in local high schools.
  • Encourage applications to NSDAR Scholarships by supplying information to the local high schools.
  • Encourage students in kindergarten through grade 12 to enter the DAR Junior American Citizens (JAC) contest to express their patriotism.
  • Support Crossnore Communities for Children with donations of books and other requested items.
  • Present American History programs at many of our meetings.
  • Present the Women in American History Award to any women, past or present, who have made a difference in North Carolina.

Chapter members attended a Naturalization ceremony with the JROTC Navy honor guard from a local high school.

Our chapter held a book drive and delivered them to Crossnore Communities for Children in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Members attended The American Revolution Experience Traveling Exhibit sponsored by the DAR and the American Battlefield Trust. The exhibit was set up at the President James K. Polk Historic Site Museum.
